چکیده

P REVIOUS STUDIES insdicate that L-cyst-eiise or related compounds may be importamst ins the metabolism of leukocytes. Thus L-cysteine, and to a lesser extent homocyst-eimse and glutathione, modify the leukopenia induced by nitrogen mustard.’ . 2 This protective effect appears to be specific in that mamsy highly reactive compoutsds w-ith structures closely related to L-cysteimse fail to prevent the leukotoxic effect of nitrogems mustard. Only those compoutids comitainimig a sulfhydryl, amino, amid carboxyl group its close apposition have beems shown to be effective. Since the dextroisomer of cysteimse is imieffective in preventimig mustard induced leukopemsia, a specific spatial comifiguratioms as well as the presemsce of certaims structural compomsemsts is required for this protective effect. The requirement of such spatial amid structural specificity for protect-ion suggest-s that L-cysteine may have a unique role iii the metabolism of leukocyt-es. The incorporatioms of radioactive L cystimse* by miormal amid leukemic leukocytes ins vivo was therefore studied. Its additioms to L-cystinie, the imscorporatioms of radio-active methiomsimse, sodium sulfate, amid sodium formate ss’as also studied.

The incorporation of radioactive phosphorus into the phospholipids of human leukemic leukocytes and platelets.

The phospholipid composition of human platelets and erythrocytes has been reported by several investigators (1-4) and the metabolism of phospholipids in human blood has been studied in some detail (5-9). Recent investigations of phospholipid metabolism of leukocytes have been reported (6, 10) but we are not aware of similar studies on platelets. In this laboratory, investigation of the biochemi...
